Hurricane Season: Need to Know
The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1st to November 30th, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October. While we embrace those summer storms and gear up for what’s to come, here are some things to consider.
Let’s start with before the hurricane comes. You see the sky turn grey and hear the familiar rumble. A storm is coming.
Before the storm hits you’ll want to make sure your electronics and any backup batteries are charged, so that if the power goes out, you can still scroll through those viral TikToks. Are you a candle person? You might want to be! It’s always a good idea to keep a few tea lights on hand. It’s also a good idea to make sure your first-aid kit is up to date, should something happen. After all, we’re talking preparedness here. Everyone’s favorite thing to think about is next on the docket: food and water. Things with good shelf lives like granola bars, beef jerkey, and nuts will keep your tummy from rumbling. Make sure you also stock up on bottled water- it’s a commodity during hurricane season.
After the storm passes, that’s when you assess the damage. How much of your supplies did you go through? Did you just barely make it, or were you coasting through like nothing happened? Would you be covered if something did happen? Hurricane season is when most people start to reassess their home protections- their sump-pump, windows, doors, and roofing. Do you feel adequately covered should weather like rain, hail, and wind impact the integrity of your home? How about a flood?
A typical PA homeowner’s insurance policy excludes flooding as something that’s covered. In most cases, the only way to get flood insurance is by purchasing a stand-alone flood policy. Our state has seen it’s fair share of flooding, and there’s likely more coming. Are you near a river, lake, or other body of water? Do you live at the bottom of a hill, or a place where you see water usually collecting? Many homeowner’s forgo purchasing coverage because they believe they are safe from flooding, but after our recent storms, we’ve seen flooding in “low risk” areas. Are you willing to gamble away your financial future by forgoing flood insurance?
